Given a non-simply connected manifold \(M\), the authors modify the familiar Fredholm representation \(\rho=(T_1,F,T_2)\) of the group \(\pi=\pi_1(M)\) with a couple \(T_1,T_2:\pi\to B(H)\) of unitary representations along with a Fredholm operator \(F\) with \(FT_1-T_2F \in \text{Comp}(H)\). By replacing \(B(H)\) with the Calkin algebra \({\mathcal K}=B(H)/\text{Comp}(H)\), they obtain a representation \(\widehat{\rho}:\pi\times{\mathbb Z}\to {\mathcal K}\) such that \(\widehat{\rho}(g,n) = T_2(g)F^n = F^n T_1(g)\) and \(\rho_*: K_A(X) @>{\text{Id}\otimes \beta}>> K_{A\widehat{\otimes} C(S^1)} (X\times S^1) @>{\widehat{\rho}}>> K_{{\mathcal K}}(X\times S^1)\), where \(A=C^*[\pi]\) is the group C*-algebra of the group \(\pi\) and \(\beta\in K_{C(S^1)}(S^1)\) denotes the canonical element related to the regular representation of \({\mathbb Z}\). Combining this with Hirzebruch's formula, the homotopy invariance of the corresponding higher signature is established in the case in which the completion of the fundamental group, with a modification the Higson-Roe Corona construction, is a manifold with boundary.
