This paper addresses generalisations of polynomial splines which depend on the topology of the underlying function space. These generalised splines are created as solutions of variational (minimisation) problems and computed as solutions of finite or infinite systems of linear functional equations. The bases of the approximation spaces are constructed using the duality theory of locally convex function spaces. Therefore, duality in vector spaces and duality of the locally convex spaces have to be discussed at the beginning of the paper. In the main sections of the article, existence theorems on the aforementioned bases are given. Several examples are provided at the end of the paper.
