An initial boundary value problem for the weakly damped wave equation of Kirchhoff type with nonlinear damping and source terms is considered. Under special assumptions the existence and uniqueness of a local weak solution as well as a result regarding the asymptotic behavior of solutions are proved. Necessary conditions for the existence of a global solution are shown.
