The authors study second order ordinary differential equations related to the Painlevé type equations and their Lagrangians. The Hamiltonian functions are obtained from the Lagrangians using the Legendre transform. In addition, the Liénard type equations and their Lagrangians are studied. This is illustrated by a number of examples. Finally, a few systems of second order ordinary differential equations and their Lagrangians are discussed. The relation between the Jacobi's last multiplier and the Lagrangian is exploited in the cases considered in this paper.
