\textit{M. Yang} and \textit{Y. Yuan} [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 200, No. 2, 677--700 (2007; Zbl 1121.65103)] developed a quadratic alternating direction implicit (ADI) finite volume element scheme for non-linear convection-diffusion problems and obtained second order convergence rates in the \(H^1\)-norm. The present authors study the ADI finite volume element with biquadratic bases for second order hyperbolic problems in two spatial dimensions. An optimal \(H^1\)-norm error estimate of second order accuracy is proved.
