A brief survey of the theory of soliton perturbations is presented. The focus is on the usefulness of the so-called Generalized Fourier Transform. Firstly, the authors consider the equation of the KdV hierarchy and the KdV perturbed version -- the Ostrovsky equation. Then the perturbation theory is presented for the Camassa-Holm hierarchy.
