Let \(F\) be a closed essential surface of genus \(g\) in a hyperbolic 3-manifold \(M\) with a toroidal cusp \(N\). Define the depth of \(F\) in \(N\) to be the maximal distance from points of \(F \cap N\) to the boundary of \(N\). The main theorem of this paper states that if \(F\) is an essential pleated surface which is not coannular to the boundary torus of \(N\), then the depth of \(F\) in \(N\) is bounded above by the constant \(\ln(2\pi g)\). Using this result, the author proceeds to prove that an immersed closed essential surface in \(M\) which is not coannular to the torus boundary components of \(M\) will remain essential in the Dehn filling manifold \(M(\gamma)\) for all but at most \(C_g\) curves \(\gamma\) in each torus boundary component of \(M\). The constant \(C_g \), which depends only on \(g\), satisfies \(C_g< 3200g^2\). Most likely, this estimate for \(C_g\) can be improved. A smaller upper bound in the case that \(F\) is totally geodesic can be found in the paper by \textit{A.~Bart} [Topology 40, No. 1, 197--211 (2001; Zbl 0961.57016)].
