The Stone duality theorem states that the category of Boolean algebras is dual to that of zero dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces. In 1962, de Vries gave an extension of this to all compact Hausdorff spaces and a category of `compingent' Boolean algebras. Region based topologies and contact algebras have been introduced as a means of giving a region based theory of space. These are based on the idea of a contact relation in addition to a Boolean algebra structure. One type of contact algebra, the normal contact algebras, are equivalent to de Vries' compingent Boolean algebras. Here another variant, local contact algebras, (LCAs), is given and a duality theorem between a category of LCAs and suitable morphisms and the category of locally compact Hausdorff spaces and perfect maps is proved.
