A characterisation of the lines external to an oval cone in \(PG(3,q),q\) even (Q1039861)

The set of lines external to the two non-singular quadrics in \(PG(3,q)\) have been characterized by \textit{R. Di Gennaro, N. Durante} and \textit{D. Olanda} [J. Geom. 80, 65--74 (2004; Zbl 1062.51005)] and by \textit{N. Durante} and \textit{D. Olanda} [Bull. Belg. Math. Soc. Simon Stevin 12, 1--4 (2005; Zbl 1133.51004)]. In this paper, the authors characterize the set of lines external to an oval cone of \(PG(3,q).\) Namely, a non-empty set of lines \(\mathcal L\) of \(PG(3,q),\) \(q\) even, is is the set of lines external to a hyperoval cone if and only if (1) every plane contains \(0,\) \(q^2,\) or \(\frac{1}{2}q(q-1)\) lines of \(\mathcal L,\) (2) every point is on \(0\) or \(\frac{1}{2}q^2\) lines of \(\mathcal L.\)
