Summary: We study regularity properties of mappings of finite distortion. We show that some sort of self-improvement phenomena hold also when only subexponential integrability is assumed for the distortion function. We extend to this setting results by \textit{D. Faraco, P. Koskela} and \textit{X. Zhong} [Adv. Math. 190, No. 2, 300--318 (2005; Zbl 1075.30012)] and \textit{M. Bildhauer, M. Fuchs} and \textit{X. Zhong} [Manuscr. Math. 116, No. 2, 135--156 (2005; Zbl 1116.49018)].
