The paper under review formulates and proves the self-intersection formula and the more general excess intersection formula for Grothendieck-Witt groups (and for Witt groups and for Chow-Witt groups). To this end, the author introduces and studies the Euler class~\(e(E)\) of a vector bundle \(E\), i.e.\ the Grothendieck-Witt version of the alternating sum \(\lambda_{-1}(E) = \sum_{i \geq 0} (-1)^i [\Lambda^i(E)]\). In particular he explicitly verifies the self-intersection formula for the zero section embedding of \(E\). The general case is then proved by using the deformation to the normal cone, as in ordinary \(K\)-theory. The project carried out in this well written paper was the subject of extended (e-mail) discussions between the author and the reviewer in 2007.
