The starting point of the paper is Schwarzenberger's theorem, which states that every rank two vector bundle \(\mathcal{E}\) on \(\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{C})\) is the direct image of an invertible sheaf over a surface that is a double covering of the plane [see \textit{R. L. E. Schwarzenberger}, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 11, 623--640 (1961; Zbl 0212.26004)]. Therefore the paper considers a double covering \(\pi:X_r \to \mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{C})\) ramified along a smooth degree \(2r\) curve \(C_{2r}\), an invertible sheaf \(\mathcal{L}\) on \(X_r\) and its direct image \(\mathcal{E} = \pi_{*}(\mathcal{L})\). If \(D\) is any line then the restriction of \(\mathcal{E}\) to \(D\) is \(O_D(a)\oplus O_D(b)\), for some integeres \(a,b\), where \(a+b = c_1(\mathcal{E}\)). A line \(D\) is a jumping line of order \(i\) if \(|a-b| \geq 2i-\epsilon\), where \(\epsilon = 0\) if \(c_1\) is even, \(-1\) otherwise. Schwarzenberger proved that, when \(r\) is 1, a line is a jumping line for \(\mathcal{E}\) if and only if it is tangent to the branch conic, while for \(r = 2\) a jumping line must be tangent to the branch quartic under the hypothesis that \(c_1(\mathcal{E})\) is odd. \textit{G. M. Ottaviani} [Boll. Unione Mat. Ital., VI. Ser., D, Algebra Geom. 3, No. 1, 5--18 (1984; Zbl 0581.14009)] proves, for every \(r \geq 1\), that a jumping line \(D\) of order \([\frac{r+\epsilon}{2}+1]\) is tangent to the branch curve \(C_{2r}\). This paper shows that Ottaviani's theorem can be improved by proving that the jumping line actually is \(r\)-tangent to the branch curve. The paper then investigates the case \(r = 2\) and gives a list of those stable bundles with odd first Chern class whose set of jumping lines is exactly the set of the lines that are bitangent to the quartic.
