An algebraic approach is presented to the stability problem for the finite sections of general band-dominated operators acting on \(l^p= l^p (\mathbb Z)\) for \(1 < p < \infty \). This approach allows to get new results which previously were known mainly for \(p = 2\) to Arveson's dichotomy for selfadjoint sequences (\(P_nAP_n) A \in S_p\), which is a result of \textit{S.\,Roch} [``Finite sections of band-dominated operators'' (Mem.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 895) (2008; Zbl 1160.47059)]. One of the main results of the present paper shows that a band-dominated operator is Fredholm if and only if the approximation numbers of its finite sections have a special behavior. Also, they use that the algebras \(S_p\) and \(S_p /k(l^p)\) are inverse closed in \(B(l^p)\) and \(B(l^p)/K(l^p)\), respectively (\(K(l^p)\) stands for the ideal of all compact operator in the Banach algebra \(B(l^p)\)). The last section is devoted to modified finite sections and their asymptotic behaviour.
