The paper under review starts with an interesting survey on the history of the discovery of the Hall basis of the free Lie algebra. The main results use techniques of Shirshov developed by him in the 1950-60's, with some improvements and translation in modern terminology. The main tools are the Composition-Diamond Lemma for free anti-commutative (non-associative) algebras and the composition of inclusion. The authors use a direct approach to construct the free anti-commutative algebra. As an application they find the Gröbner-Shirshov basis of the ideal of the free anti-commutative algebra generated by the evaluations of the Jacobi identity. The authors show that the set of normal words consists of the Hall words. In this way they provide a new proof that the Hall words form a basis of a free Lie algebra.
