This paper is concerned with the study of the Bean critical state model for superconductors with displacement current and field-dependent critical current density. The author is mainly concerned with the existence and uniqueness of the solution. For this purpose it is introduced a notion of generalized solution which allows to consider various different boundary conditions. The main steps to prove the existence of a solution are the following: (i) a standard approximation procedure by Lipschitz continuous functions and (ii) the weak limit of the solutions to these regularized systems satisfies the initial system. This last step is the most important part of the proof and is achieved by suitable localized energy estimates by using local compactness results for the magnetic field in the approximating solutions.
