Structures preserved by generalized inversion and Schur complementation (Q1044576)

The authors investigate the inheritance of certain structures under generalized matrix inversion. These consist of rank and displacement structures. The study is done in such a way that the derivation of the preservation of rank structure can be carried over to that of the displacement structure. Particular attention is paid to the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse. It is shown that, for the cases of most interest, the ranks of the structure satisfied by the Moore-Penrose inverse can be at most double compared with the original ranks. Also the preservation of the rank structure by generalized Schur complements is considered.
