The authors characterize essential normality for elementary operators \(T\mapsto ATB\) and \(T\mapsto ATB-T\) acting on the Hilbert-Schmidt class. They also find the polar decomposition of an elementary operator of length one, so they can explore the Aluthge transform of these elementary operators. In the final section of the paper, the authors characterize Hermitian elementary operators of length two.
