The authors consider viscoelastic, two-dimensional flows for a large class of parameter dependent Oldroyd fluids, among them the important Oldroyd-B model. Their objective is to derive and to strengthen a (non-) blowup criterion due to \textit{J.-Y. Chemin} and \textit{N. Masmoudi} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 33, No. 1, 84--112 (2001; Zbl 1007.76003)], an analogue of the Beale-Kato-Majda (non-) blowup criterion for the Euler equations in 3D. The authors tackle their objective by establishing appropriate a priori estimates for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations and proving Hölder estimates for the velocity field and elastic stress tensor by use of Littlewood-Paley theory. The advantage of their proof is that it avoids the complicated use of ``a losing a priori estimate'' for transport equations, introduced by \textit{H. Bahouri} and \textit{J.-Y. Chemin} in [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 127, No. 2, 159--181 (1994; Zbl 0821.76012)].
