One of Weyl's classical theorems states that a certain tensor, the Weyl tensor, is a conformal invariant. This paper explores the following converse question: If \(g\) and \(g'\) are smooth pseudo-Riemannian metrics on a manifold \(M\) of dimension \(n\geq 4\) whose Weyl tensors are equal to \(M\) and nonzero over some open dense subset of \(M\), are \(g\) and \(g'\) conformally related? The author proves this statement for Riemannian metrics \(g\) (hence \(g'\) will be Riemannian, too) and finds counterexamples in the Lorentz case. However, the converse statement is also proved in the Lorentz setting if the subset of points where the associated Weyl tensor is of Petrov type \(N\) (or zero) has empty interior.
