Let \(M\subset Q\) be an \(n\)-dimensional complete, non-compact submanifold of an Hadamard manifold \(Q\). Assume that the \((n-1)\)th Ricci curvature of \(M\) is \(\leq(n-1)K\), where \(K\geq 0\)is fixed. Let \({\mathcal L}= \Delta-(b-1)K+{\sqrt{n-1}\over 2}|{\mathcal A}|^2\), where \({\mathcal A}\) is the second fundamental form of \(M\). If the mean curvature \(H\) of \(M\) is bounded, \(\dim M\geq 3\), and \(\text{Ind}(\alpha)<\infty\) then \(M\) has only finitely many ends. Moreover, if \(H\) is bounded from below by a positive constant then \(\text{Ind}(\alpha)= 0\) implies that \(M\) has only one end. In this case any harmonic map of finite energy from \(M\) to a nonpositively curved target is constant.
