The author establishes nice connections between the divisor problem error terms and the error terms in the mean square problem of the Riemann zeta-function. Put \[ I(T)=\frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^T |\zeta(\tfrac12+it)|^2\,dt,\quad D(x)=\sum_{n\leq x} d(n), \] \[ I(T) =\frac{T}{2\pi} \log \frac{T}{2\pi} + (2\gamma-1)\frac{T}{2\pi} + E(T),\quad D(T) =x \log x + (2\gamma-1)x + \Delta(x). \] It is conjectured that \(\Delta(x) = O(x^{1/4 +\varepsilon})\). The author proves some nice general results. These show that a corollary to the above conjecture is \[ \zeta(\tfrac12+it) = O(t^{3/20 + \varepsilon})\;\text{and}\;E(t)=O(t^{5/16+ \varepsilon}). \] The earlier exponents here were \(173/1067=0.1621\dots\) and \(346/1067=0.3242\dots\) while \(3/20=0.15\), \(5/16=0.3125\). The results are important and the proofs complicated.
