This is a survey article on mathematical tools for evaluation of distributed systems which are modeled as queueing networks. It includes results obtained up to 1982. Most attention is put on closed form expressions for steady state distributions of the describing Markov processes and - if closed expressions do not exist - on simple (closed form) approximations for these quantities. Several typical examples for the application of the models are given. Some other points of interest: customer flows in networks, computational algorithms, diffusion theory. The list of references includes 206 articles and books and is of special interest because it includes both ''eastern'' and ''western'' references. So this article may serve as a necessary connection between the two research communities.
