As an application of a theorem of Deuring and Shafarevich, the following theorem is proved: If K/k is a cyclic extension of degree \(\ell^ n\) of an algebraic function field F/k (\(\ell\) prime, k algebraically closed of characteristic \(p\neq 0)\), the modular representation obtained by the action of Gal(K/F) on the elementary abelian \(\ell\)-class group of K is the sum of \(\lambda_ F-\delta -1\) regular representations of Gal(K/F) in the field with \(\ell\) elements, \(\delta +1\) indecomposable representations of degree \(\ell^ n-\ell^{n-m}+1\), \(t_ 0-\delta -1\) indecomposable representations of degree \(\ell^ n-\ell^{n-m}\) and for \(i=1,2,....,m-1\), \(t_ i\) indecomposable representations of degree \(\ell^ n-\ell^{n-m+i}\), where \(\lambda_ F\) is the \(\ell\)-rank of the \(\ell\)-class group of F, \(\delta\) equals 0 or 1 according as \(\ell\) equals p or not, \(\ell^{n-m}\) is the degree over F of the maximal unramified subfield and \(t_ i\), \(i=0,1,...,m-1\), is the number of primes of F with ramification index \(\ell^{m-i}\).
