The outer region of (extreme) Reißner-Nordström space time is bounded by four characteristic surfaces: past and future horizon \((H^- ,H^+)\) resp. infinity \((J^-,J^+)\). For the conformally coupled scalar wave equation data are given freely on one of these surfaces, and set to zero on a neighboring surface. A formal series expansion can be shown to be convergent and to be a rigorous solution in the case that the data are prescribed on either \(H=H^-\cup H^+\) or \(J=J^-\cup J^+\). For the mathematically well posed and causally/physically much more reasonable setting on \(P=H^-\cup J^-\) or \(F=H^+\cup J^+\) the convergence cannot be shown; if one assumes the plausible although not proven statement that the solutions in the H or J case converge on the opposite boundary, a frequency dependent renormalization gives solutions also in the P or F case.
