Considering a static and centrally symmetric gravitational field characterised by a Newtonian potential function \(\phi =k(M/r)\), the author proves that the time interval \(\Delta t_ 1\) between any two events measured by a stationary observer at a distance \(r=r_ 1\) from the centre and at a potential \(\phi (r_ 1)\) is less than the corresponding time interval \(\Delta t_ 2\) measured at \(r_ 2>r_ 1\) with a potential \(\phi (r_ 2)\) by \(\Delta t_ 1=\exp \{c^{-2}(\phi (r_ 1)-\phi (r_ 2)\}\cdot \Delta t_ 2\) which implies that clocks nearer to the centre of the spherical mass runs slower than those further away. Thus, the author claims to have obtained the time dilatation effect of relativity theory from the Newtonian theory. For regions free of source, this is achieved by considering a nonlinear field equation of the type \(\nabla^ 2\phi =-4\pi k\rho_ g=-c^{-2}(\nabla \phi)^ 2\) and using the principle of equivalence.
