Some regimes of peristaltic pumping (Q1057765)

A study is made of the flow regimes at large wave numbers and amplitudes of the deformation of the channel wall. A numerical method used earlier by the author [Numerical investigation of finite-amplitude peristaltic pumping, on pp. 100-105 in: Convective flows, No.1, Perm (1979)], augmented by a calculation of the pressure in accordance with a scheme of the type proposed by \textit{C. W. Richards} and \textit{C. M. Crane} [Int. J. Numer. Methods Eng. 15, 599-610 (1980; Zbl 0441.76023)], is used to determine the limits of applicability of the results reviewed by \textit{M. J. Jaffrin} and \textit{A. H. Shapiro} [Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech. 3, 13-36 (1971)]. It is shown that at sufficiently large wave numbers a new type of trapping not associated with splitting of the central streamline is possible.
