If \(\geq_ r\) and \(\geq_ d\) are two quarternary relations on an arbitrary set A, a ratio/difference representation for \(\geq_ r\) and \(\geq_ d\) is defined as a function f that represents \(\geq_ r\) as an ordering of numerical ratios and \(\geq_ d\) as an ordering of numerical differences. An axiomatization of the ratio/difference representation was proposed by \textit{D. H. Krantz}, \textit{R. D. Luce}, \textit{P. Suppes} and \textit{A. Tversky}, Foundations of measurement, Vol. 1 (1971; Zbl 0232.02040). In the paper, an analysis is given, that locates an error in the attempted proof of the representation theorem appearing in Krantz et al. Theorems 1 and 2 of the paper deal with the problem of existence of ratio/difference representations.
