Let X be a Banach space. A subset F of the conjugate space \(X^*\) is called a normalizing subset if the Dixmier's characteristic \(r(F)=\sup \{r: rB(X^*)\subset cl^*B(F)\}\) is a positive number, where B(X) is the unit ball of X and \(cl^*A\) denotes the weak* closure of the subset \(A\subset X\). It is known that the domain \(R(X)=\{\lambda: \exists F\subset X^*,r(F)=\lambda \}\) for the closed total proper subspace F of \(X^*\) is an interval (0,a) the boundary points of which may be or may not be included. Results concerning the possible domains of the Dixmier's characteristic of the space X and its subspaces Y and concerning the possible values of a are given in the paper. The concept of strongly normalizing subspace is introduced and it is shown, that this concept is fundamental for the study of linear finite dimensional regularization (in Tikhonov's sense) for incorrect problems.
