The authors study planar cellular automata as reaction-diffusion models in excitable media. They describe the structure of spatio-temporal oscillations originated from various initial conditions. Under some assumptions, the sequence of states on the plane is ultimately either stationary or periodic. In the latter case it is shown that there exists only one admissible period (independent of the initial conditions), and the corresponding plane structure consists of parallel equidistant target wave-fronts expanding with constant speed. Numerous illustrations are given.
