The theory of deformation kinetics is extended to three dimensions. Nonlinear forms of the equations of evolution of the internal variables in the theory of irreversible thermodynamics are thereby derived thus establishing a connection between atomic and macroscopic laws. Application to the mechanical response of metals in three-dimensional stress fields is illustrated. Explicit relations are derived for the steady creep of metals in the presence of combined tension and torsion.
