A finite-element model is used to analyse the saltwater upconing mechanism which results from pumping a well, and to determine the salinity of the pumped water caused by the intrusion of saltwater. Effects of hydrodynamic dispersion and density dependencies are considered. The intrusion process and the saltwater contamination are studied by means of an axisymmetric model of upconing below a single well. The results show the significant role of dispersion and demonstrate some new effects due to density and dispersion coupling.
