Let K be an algebraic number field of finite degree over the rationals. The present paper continues the study of character sums in K initiated in the first article [J. Number Theory 17, 52-70 (1983; Zbl 0511.10028)] of this series. As before, we are concerned with expressions of the form \(\sum \chi (\alpha)\), where \(\chi\) denotes a primitive non-principal character of the multiplicative group of non-zero residue classes modulo an integral ideal of K. The sum is taken over totally positive algebraic integers lying in certain parallelotopes. Making use of the Siegel-Grotz summation formula the author derived an inequality of Pólya-Vinogradov type [loc. cit.]. In the special case of a prime ideal modulus this result has been improved by the author's paper [Monatsh. Math. 95, 275- 286 (1983; Zbl 0508.10025)], generalizing in an appropriate way the important work of D. A. Burgess to K. Here, we extend the estimates for prime ideal modulus character sums to cubefree ideal modulus character sums. One application is to the problem of investigating the distribution of primitive roots modulo the square of a prime ideal of first degree.
