The well known first Brauer-Thrall conjecture says, that a finite dimensional algebra A is of bounded type, that is the dimension of finitely generated indecomposable modules is bounded, iff A is of finite type, that is there exist only finitely many such modules. The first proof of this conjecture was given by \textit{A. V. Rojter} [Izv. Akad. Nauk. SSSR, Ser. Mat. 32, 1275-1282 (1968; Zbl 0167.310)]. \textit{M. Auslander} [Commun. Algebra 1, 269-310 (1974; Zbl 0285.16029)] then showed the validity of the conjecture for more general situations, which include the case of an artinian ring, cf. for example \textit{C. M. Ringel} [Lect. Notes Math. 831, 104-136 (1980; bl. 444.16019)] for a short proof. In the last case now the author gives a new approach: Studying the functor ring T [\textit{K. R. Fuller}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 54, 39-44 (1976; Zbl 0325.16024)] of a ring R, he is able to interpret relevant properties of the categories mod(\({\mathfrak C})\), \({\mathfrak C}\) the category of finitely presented R-modules and mod(R) as properties of the ring T ({\S} 1,{\S} 2). In {\S} 3 the author then proves that f.e. the following properties are equivalent: (i) R is of finite type. (ii) T is perfect (iii) \({}_ TT\) is locally artinian and noetherian. (iv) R is of bounded type.
