In [\textit{A. Sieradski} and \textit{M. N. Dyer}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 15, 199-217 (1979; Zbl 0415.20003)], an invariant, the bias, was defined for \({\mathbb{Z}}G\)-modules M occurring as the final term in a free resolution of the trivial module \({\mathbb{Z}}\), where G is a finite group. This invariant often distinguishes between isomorphism types of minimal relation modules for G, where G is finite abelian. The present paper extends the definition of bias to certain modules over group rings of infinite groups. There are applications to the study of minimal relation modules of finitely generated abelian groups.
