Let H be a subgroup of a finite group G and let F be an algebraically closed field of characteristic O. \textit{M. Osima} [Math. J. Okayama Univ. 1, 33-61 (1952; Zbl 0047.028)] proved that if \(\chi_ 1,...,\chi_ r\) are all distinct irreducible characters of H over F, then the number of linearly independent characters of G among the induced characters \(\chi_ 1^ G,...,\chi_ r^ G\) is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of G which contain an element of H. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the above result to projective characters. Namely, the following result is established. Theorem. Let \(\alpha\) be an arbitrary element of \(Z^ 2(G,F^*)\) and let \(\chi_ 1,...,\chi_ r\) be all distinct irreducible \(\beta\)- characters of H where \(\beta\) is the restriction of \(\alpha\) to \(H\times H\). Then the number of linearly independent \(\alpha\)-characters of G among the induced characters \(\chi_ 1^ G,...,\chi_ r^ G\) is equal to the number of \(\alpha\)-regular classes of G which contain an element of H.
