The three letters which appear in English translation in this article were written by Sophus Lie and sent to Felix Klein in late 1882, during Lie's sojourn in Paris. Lie gives reports on current work (calculating the invariants of two-dimensional Lie groups) as well as reports on the progress of the first colume of the Acta Mathematica. The cross-currents of nationalism and personal conflict among the mathematicians of Paris and Berlin, as perceived by Lie, are also discussed very frankly.
