    We investigate the following two-dimensional positive feedback system with diffusion, the two components being subject to different conditions: \(\partial u/\partial t=d\Delta u-a_{11}u+a_{12}v\) in (0,\(\infty)\times \Omega\); \(\partial v/\partial t=\Delta v+\phi (u)u- a_{22}v;\) \(u=0\), \(\partial v/\partial \nu =0\) in (0,\(\infty)\times \partial \Omega\); \(u=u_ 0\), \(v=v_ 0\) in \(\{\) \(0\}\) \(\times \Omega\), where \(\Omega\) is an open bounded domain, \(\Omega \subset {\mathbb{R}}^ n\), \(n>1\), with \(C^{1,a}\) smooth boundary \(\partial \Omega\), \(\partial /\partial \nu\) denotes the normal (outward) derivative on \(\partial \Omega\), d, \(a_{ij}\) \((i,j=1,2)\) are positive constants, \(u_ 0,v_ 0\) are prescribed functions, \(u_ 0,v_ 0\in L^ p(\Omega)\), \(p>n\); \(u_ 0,v_ 0\geq 0\) almost everywhere, and \(\phi \in C^ 1({\mathbb{R}}^+)\) satisfies (i) \(\phi\) is positive and decreasing on \({\mathbb{R}}^+\cup \{0\};\) (ii) there is a positive constant M such that \(0<[\phi (s)s]'\leq M\) for all \(s\in {\mathbb{R}}^+;\) (iii) there is a \(s_ 0\in {\mathbb{R}}^+\cup \{0\}\) such that \(\phi (s_ 0)\leq a_{11}a_{22}/a_{12}\) for all \(s\geq s_ 0.\) For the onset of a non-negative, non-trivial stationary solution (which is provided to be unique), a necessary and sufficient condition, as well as the global attractivity character of such a solution, is established. This condition is expressed in terms of certain parameters. Generally, these parameters are difficult to compute exactly, but we provide, in the one-dimensional case, an explicit approximation for them.
