    Let \(A(D_{\rho})\), \(\rho >1\), denote the class of functions holomorphic in \(D_{\rho}\). Suppose that \((S_{m,n}f)(x)\) is the complete spline interpolant of degree 2m-1 to f on [-1,1] relative to given knots \(x_ 1<...<x_ n\) in (-1,1). In connection with a 1968 conjecture of I. J. Schoenberg regarding \(\lim_{m\to \infty}(S_{m,n}f)(x)\) the authors prove that \(\lim_{m\to \infty}\| f-S_{m,n}f\|^{1/m}\leq 1/\rho\) where \(\| \cdot \|\) denotes the uniform norm on [-1,1]. Moreover for any \(\zeta\) \(\not\in [-1,1]\) they show that if \(f_{\zeta}(x)=(\zeta -x)^{-1}\) then \[ \lim_{m\to \infty}(1- \zeta^ 2)^ m[f_{\zeta}(x)-(S_{m,n}f_{\zeta})(x)](1-x^ 2)^{- m}=B_ n(x)f_{\zeta}(x)/B_ n(\zeta) \] uniformly for \(x\in [-1,1]\) where \(B_ n(z)=\prod^{n}_{1}(z-x_ i)/(1-zx_ i)\).
