Let A be an associative algebra over a field K of characteristic 0, let \(H_*(A)\) be its Hochschild homology groups, and \(HC_*(A)\) its cyclic homology groups. When \(A=K[V]\) is the coordinate ring of a smooth affine variety V over K, these groups are closely related to the differential forms and de Rham cohomology of V. The author shows how, for general A, a derivation D of A determines compatible endomorphisms of \(H_*(A)\) and \(HC_*(A)\) and he proves 3 key corollaries, each of which reduces, when \(A=K[V]\), to the fact that D acts trivially on the de Rham cohomology of A. These results are extended to differential graded algebras (A,d) with d of degree -1 via hyperhomology theories, cyclic and Hochschild. The main result here is that cyclic-hyperhomology-made-periodic depends only on \(A_ 0/dA\), if \({\mathbb{Q}}\subset K\). He also obtains results on reduction modulo nilpotent ideals in cyclic-homology-made-periodic, and on the localized So(2)-equivariant cohomology of the free loop space of a path- connected space.
