Let F be a non-Archimedean local field. In 1979 \textit{Ph. Kutzko} proved the local Langlands conjecture for \(GL_ 2(F)\) [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 112, 381-412 (1980; Zbl 0469.22013)]. A key instrument in his proof was a lifting from supercuspidal representations of \(GL_ 2(F)\) to representations of \(GL_ 2(E)\), where E is a tame extension of F. Previously, following Shintani, R. P. Langlands had defined such a lifting where E is any cyclic extension of F; this lifting is characterized by character identities. What made Ph. Kutzko's proof go through was a comparison of his base change with the other one, in the case where E/F is quadratic and unramified. It is natural then - as well as important - to compare these two liftings in more general cases: in the present paper it is proved that they agree for all odd tame cyclic extensions E/F; the method of proof is to show that the representations of \(GL_ 2(F)\) obtained by the tame lift do satisfy the character identities of the Shintani lift. This involves a precise description of the construction of cuspidal representations of \(GL_ 2(F)\) and \(GL_ 2(E)\) via induction from maximal compact mod center subgroups. In this description some nice elements appear called generic; they are also those where the values of characters are easiest to compute. Characters are computed by breaking them into double classes relative to the inducing subgroup (by Frobenius reciprocity). It is to be noted that the double class of the identity is handled via an argument different from the other ones. The actual computations are rather technical, but the method seems capable of further applications.
