A uniform algebra A on a compact space X is tight if for each \(g\in C(X)\), the Hankel-type operator \(S_ g\) from A into C(X)/A defined by \(S_ g(f)=gf+A\) for each \(f\in A\), is weakly compact. It is shown that two families of uniform algebras (the algebras such as R(K) which arise in the theory of rational approximation on compact subsets of the complex plane and algebras of analytic functions on domains in \({\mathbb{C}}^ n\) for which a certain \({\bar \partial}\)-problem is solvable) are tight. A couple of characterizations of tight algebras are given, one of which is used to show that the property of being tight places severe restrictions on the Gleason parts of A and the measures in \(A^{\perp}\). In the end of the article the problem of introducing analytic structure into maximal ideal space of a tight algebra is considered.
