This work examines shock wave propagation in a multiphase mixture, one in which the different constituents may react but are not intermiscible, and in which the constituents may possess individual microstructure, such as porosity. It is this last characteristic which represents an extension beyond results previously available [see e.g. \textit{R. M. Bowen} and \textit{P. J. Chen}, Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo, II. Ser. 21, 267-283 (1972; Zbl 0288.73007) and together with \textit{J. W. Nunziato}, Acta Mech. 21, 1-11 (1975; Zbl 0295.73025)], and which attemps to model certain complex mixtures such as suspensions and explosives. The author introduces the constituent and mixture volume fractions as additional kinematic variables, and postulates an additional set of balance relations. The guiding principles in this formulation are consistency of the constituent equations with previous formulations for the motion of porous materials, and the consistency of the mixture equations with those of a single body. The Hugoniot conditions for the mixture and the constituents and the mixture are then derived, as an equation for the evolution of a shock. The paper concludes with the weak shock approximation.
