Consider the selfadjoint realizations of the Schrödinger operator \(- \Delta +q(x)\) in \(\Omega\), an unbounded domain of \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\), with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The main result of this paper is to give upper and lower bounds for the numbers N(\(\lambda\),\(\Omega)\) of their eigenvalues \(\lambda '<\lambda\). \(\lambda\) is an arbitrary number less than a lower bound of the essential spectrum of the selfadjoint realization with Neumann condition, whose estimate is also done in the paper. The method of proof is to localize the problem, by tesselating \(\Omega\), to cubes and to use the min-max principle. The potential q(x), which is a real-valued function in \(L^ s_{loc}(\Omega)\) with some \(s\geq 1\) depending on n, is further assumed to obey a certain condition expressed in terms of the used tesselation of \(\Omega\). The result is also specialized to the case \(\Omega ={\mathbb{R}}^ n\) so as to deduce the asymptotic formulas for \(N(\lambda,{\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) as \(\lambda \to +\infty\) and \(\lambda\) \(\to 0-\), for classes of functions q(x) treated by \textit{M. Reed} and \textit{B. Simon} [Methods of modern mathematical phys., IV: Analysis of operators, Chapter XIII, {\S} 15 (1978; Zbl 0401.47001)], as well as the Cwikel-Lieb-Rosenbljum bound for \(N(0,{\mathbb{R}}^ n)\).
