Let Comp be the category of metric compacta with continuous maps as morphisms, and let \(\exp^ c_ n: Comp\to Comp\) be the covariant functor which assigns to a compactum X the space \(\exp_ n^ c X\) of its closed subspaces of at most n components (with Hausdorff metric) and to a map \(f: X\to Y\) assigns the function \(\exp^ c_ nf\) sending A to f(A). The problem is to characterize a space X with (a) \(\exp_ n^ c X\) being an ANR, (b) \(\exp_ n^ c X\) being an AR, (c) \(\exp^ c_ n X\) homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube. Theorems 2 and 4 give solutions. In particular, according to Theorem 2, \(\exp_ n^ c X\in ANR\) (AR) iff X is locally connected (and connected). The paper (especially Theorem 2) is closely related to a paper by \textit{V. V. Fedorchuk} [Usp. Mat. Nauk 36, No.3(219), 177-195 (1981; Zbl 0495.54008)] which concerns the functors exp and \(\exp^ c\). Also \textit{M. M. Zarichnyj} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 271, 524-528 (1983; Zbl 0544.54008)] discussed the problem of preserving ANR by an arbitrary covariant functor F: Metr\(\to Metr\). It would be nice if the author mentioned those papers and showed their relationships with his own results.
