The author's purpose in writing this paper was to summarize and develop mathematical models for describing variability in the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere. Stationary processes, point processes, and renewal theory seem to be the principal tools used in the construction and analysis of the models. There are seven substantive chapters entitled: Some basic probability; The general model; Residence times and mean concentrations; The variance of the concentration; The Gibbs and Slinn approximation; Precipitation scavenging, and The concentration process. Applied probabilists and others, working in the environmental field, should find this paper a very useful addition to the literature.
