The author considers an inconsistent linear matrix equation \(AX+YB=C\) where \(A, B\) and \(C\), respectively, are \((r+1)\times r\), \(s\times (s+1)\) and \((r+1)\times (s+1)\) real matrices. A connection is given between the least-squares solution and the solution that minimizes an arbitrary norm of the residual matrix \(C-AX-YB\). The result is an extension of a theorem by \textit{V. P. Sreedharan} [Numer. Math. 13, 146--151 (1969; Zbl 0185.40603)] concerning an overdetermined system of \(n+1\) linear equations in \(n\) unknowns.
