    Let \(F\) be a field of characteristic zero, and let \(x_ 1,\dots,x_ m\), \(y_ 1,\dots,y_ n\), and \(t\) be independent indeterminates. A polynomial \(p\) in \(F[x_ 1,\dots,x_ m, y_ 1,\dots,y_ n]\) is said to be supersymmetric if (1) \(p\) is symmetric in \(x_ 1,\dots,x_ m\) and in \(y_ 1,\dots,y_ n\), (2) when the substitution \(x_ 1=t\), \(y_ 1=t\) is made in \(p\), the resulting polynomial is independent of \(t\). Let \(T(m,n)\) denote the algebra of all supersymmetric polynomials in \(F[x_ 1,\dots,x_ m, y_ 1,\dots,y_ n]\). For \(r\geq 1\), define \[ \sigma^{(r)}_{m,n}=(x^ r_ 1+x^ r_ 2+\dots+x^ r_ m)-(y^ r_ 1+y^ r_ 2+...+y^ r_ n). \] In his work on the Casimir elements of the general linear Lie superalgebras the reviewer was led to conjecture that 1 and the \(\sigma^{(r)}_{m,n}\) generate the algebra \(T(m,n)\) [p. 115 in: Differential geometric methods in mathematical physics, Jerusalem 1982, Math. Phys. Stud. 6, 115--124 (1984; Zbl 0548.17003)]. The author proves that the conjecture is correct. Independently, a more general result has been published without proof by \textit{A. N. Sergeev} [C. R. Acad. Bulg. Sci. 35, 573--576 (1982; Zbl 0501.17003)].
