Let G be a semi-simple, simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of prime characteristic p, with maximal torus T contained in a Borel subgroup B. Let \(H^ 0(G/B,L(\chi))=H^ 0(\chi)\) be the finite dimensional sheaf cohomology module associated to the line bundle L(\(\chi)\) induced from a dominant character \(\chi\) of T. \(H^ 0(\chi)\) is a dual Weyl module, it possesses a unique irreducible submodule \(M_{\chi}\) whose high weight \(\chi\) is also the highest weight in \(H^ 0(\chi)\), and the corresponding weight space of \(H^ 0(\chi)\) has dimension one. In this paper, the author obtains structural information on the Weyl modules for \(SL_ 3\) in the form of a socle series of \(H^ 0(\chi)\), for \(\chi\) generically situated in the bottom \(p^ 2\)-alcove. In particular, the socle series determines all extensions between pairs of irreducible modules whose high weights are so situated. He applies the results to determine the submodule structure of \(H^ 0(\chi)\), and describes the lattice of submodules in terms of abstract extensions between composition factors. This result depends on the fact that the composition factors of \(H^ 0(\chi)\) for \(SL_ 3\) are multiplicity free in the generic case. The author announces that he obtained similar results for the socle series for the groups of type \(B_ 2\) using the same techniques. The results for \(A_ 2\) have been obtained independently by R. Irving, using hyperalgebraic methods.
