The relation between energy forms on a self-adjoint harmonic space (X,\({\mathcal H})\) studied by \textit{F. Y. Maeda} [Hiroshima Math. J. 2, 313- 337 (1972; Zbl 0273.31015), ibid. 3, 37-60 (1973; Zbl 0273.31016)] and Dirichlet forms on \(L^ 2(X,m)\) in the sense of Fukushima and Silverstein is clarified. It is shown that Maeda's energy form E with domain \(E_ 0\) given by a self-adjoint harmonic space (X,\({\mathcal H})\) can be considered as an ''extended Dirichlet space with reference measure m'' for a Radon measure m on X if and only if \(m(P)=0\) for every polar Borel subset of X and \(m(U)>0\) for every finely open Borel subset \(U\neq \emptyset\) of X.
