    The author considers the elliptic self-adjoint boundary value problem (*) \(Au(x)=\lambda u(x)\), \(B_ j u(x)|_{\partial G}=0\), \(j=1,...,m\), where A is elliptic of order 2m on a compact infinitely smooth n- dimensional manifold G with boundary \(\partial \Omega\). Suppose that (*) is semi-bounded. Then under suitable assumptions the distribution function N(\(\lambda)\) of (*) satisfies \[ (1)\quad N(\lambda)=a\lambda^{n/2m}+O(\lambda^{(n-1)/2m}),\quad \lambda \to +\infty. \] Furthermore under a condition on the classical trajectories of \(h(x,\xi)=\sigma_{2m}(x,\xi)^{m}\) where \(\sigma_{2m}\) is the principal symbol of A the author obtains: \[ (2)\quad N(\lambda)=a\lambda^{n/2m}+b\lambda^{(n-1)/2m}+o(\lambda^{(n- 1)/2m}),\quad \lambda \to +\infty. \] (1) and (2) extend previous results of Ivrij stated in the second order case \((m=1)\).
